ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the impact of unemployment on youth restiveness in Akwa Ibom State. Specifically, the study was aimed at examining the causes of unemployment among youths in Akwa Ibom, examine the causes of youths restiveness in Akwa Ibom State, examine the effects of youths restiveness in Akwa Ibom State, examine the relationship between unemployment and youths’ restiveness in Akwa Ibom State, and examine the relationship between corrupt politicians practices and youths’ involvement in crime as a means of breaking their vicious circle of poverty in their families perpetuated by unemployment of the youths in Akwa Ibom State. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 260 responses were used as sample size for this study which was selected using the stratified random technique. The study adopted the Keynesian Theory Of Unemployment, Relative Deprivation Theory (RDT), and Anomie Theory. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between unemployment and youths’ restiveness in Akwa Ibom State from 2015-2021 at (β = 0.887, R2 = 0.936, P =.000). The study also revealed that there is a significant relationship between corrupt politicians practices and youths’ involvement in crime as a means of breaking their vicious circle of poverty in their families perpetuated by unemployment of the youths in Akwa Ibom State from 2015-2021 at (β = 0.896, R2 = 0.952, P =.000). The study there recommends that Akwa Ibom State government should develop information system to capture bio-data of unemployed youth in the state so as to provide unemployment benefits to these target groups, as this will help to minimize criminal activities in the state. More so, the youth should resort to dialogue rather than reckless destruction of lives and property whenever they are aggrieved or have issues with the government. This is because the cost of violent conflicts youth restiveness when juxtaposed with merits of peaceful dialogue / negotiations can hardly be overemphasized.
